Warning for animal abuse, homelessness, trans issues (sometimes handled with offensive cluelessness), and implied child sexual abuse. Not all in the same story, though, this ain’t Crossed.

“Frenzy” by Mark Waid and Rod Wigham is a tense sci-fi thriller with a dynamite elevator pitch: Which of these six trapped heroes will kill the other five?

You might think the answer is ‘‘obviously Guy Gardner,’’ but maybe that’s just what they want you to think. )

"There's something I believe Grant Morrison came up with in Arkham Asylum with Dave McKean: that the Joker has super-sanity; he has to reinvent himself every day to try and keep up with all the stimuli the world throws at him that he can't regulate. And I have a friend who's a neurobiologist, and we were talking about stuff, and I read things about people with profound, untreatable depression issues.

"And this guy built a cap that regulates electricity. He had a patient whose entire life was depressive episodes, suicide attempts, institutionalisations, in an endless cycle, and at some point, on an MRI or a CT scan or something, he saw that some part of her brain wasn't lighting up as it should be. And he went to RadioShack and just made it; it literally just pings the dark parts of her mind. And at the time of the article, her life had changed. She had held a job for more than one year, and she was engaged to be married, like everything was different for this woman. It's just kind of playing with all this stuff like, what if that super sanity is generating like all this electrical activity beyond what people are supposed to have in your brain, and that's why he's so thin all the time, he's like just burning like a marathon's worth of calories every day, just being alive… And what happens if you stop that? That's where we meet our boy is in a tube, and because now his metabolism has stopped, he's not wraith-like and thin anymore." -- Matt Fraction

welcome to the last entry of gen 6, folks! it is possible that this is the last update that will fall within the 10-year time frame that i jokingly said it was going to take to finish this legacy. hilariously naive of me to think my chronic distractibility could be contained within a mere decade.

i look forward to finishing the cakebreads by the year 2036! )

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

The Artemis II mission is due for take off this week, and we wish them well

The newly recovered Doctor Who episodes will be available in the UK on BBC iPlayer at 6am this coming Friday.

"Chag Pesach Sameach" to those who celebrate Passover

"Happy Easter" to those who celebrate Easter

"Happy Cheap Chocolate Egg Eve" to those who celebrate that.

"Happy Long Weekend" to those who celebrate neither and don't like chocolate.

and "We're Terribly Sorry" for those who have to work over the aforementioned long weekend.

Lot going on in real world today, so that's about it.

I have a few tangents to explore with this one! The main story part will be quickish: three out of four of the stories in this JLQ volume are better placed elsewhere (we’ve seen one already). It’ll also be quickish because two of the three characters in the remaining story (Flash and Thunderbolt) can autocomplete the phrase “Quick as a…!” Could’ve been three for three if the third character had been the Crimson Fox. )

Pairings/Characters: Magda Rakosi/Sandor Rakosi, Angelique Bouchard Collins/Barnabas Collins, Barnabas Collins/Julia Hoffman, Nicholas Blair, Aristede, Andreas Petofi, Quentin Collins

Rating: Gen

Length: 93,699 words

Creator Links: AO3 Profile

Theme: Siblings

Summary: What if Julia loses her memory? What would happen if Blair had to actually help the Collins family? The answer was obvious: He'd hate it. He'd hate it soooo hard.

Reccer's Notes: Siblings come in all flavors, and this fic explores the dynamics of a witches' coven brother and sister, Angelique and Nicholas. With Satan as "parent," how is the more familiar sibling relationship different? How is it the same? Author delves delightfully into the question, as well as the all-too-human found-sibling relationship of Quentin and Julia.

Rating: Teen

Creator Links: Evilharlowe on AO3
Themes: Siblings, Action/Adventure, Competence, Established relationship + plot, canon LGBTQ+ characters

Summary: Four months after their wedding, Shane Hollander and Hayden Pike are kidnapped by disillusioned fans who see Shane's coming out and departure from the Voyageurs as the ultimate betrayal. With the police off-limits and a ten million dollar ransom on the clock, Ilya makes the last phone call he ever expected to make — to the estranged brother in Moscow he hasn't spoken to in three years. What follows is a night of unlikely alliances, hockey sticks used as weapons, and the discovery that family isn't defined by blood but by who shows up when everything falls apart.

Reccer's Notes: This is a rare Heated Rivalry story in which Alexei Rozanov isn't a complete shit. He's fairly one-dimensionally a baddie in both the books and the show, but here, while the author doesn't pretend he's a nice guy, the fic leans into him being a police officer and gives him both competence, and underlying family loyalty to Ilya when the chips are down. Another plus is that Shane is far from being a helpless victim. Gripping, and an excellent read.

Fandom: Shadowhunters
Pairings/Characters: Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood, Jace Wayland, Isabelle Lightwood

Length: 31,296 words

Theme: Siblings

Summary: Years ago, when Alec, Izzy and Jace were just starting going on missions, Alec pushed Jace out of the way of a rare and lethal demon. The demon's power rested in ice and its venom almost froze its victims to death. Alec survived but was warned that he would never truly be cured. The venom would rise up in his blood again and again.

With Valentine making moves against everyone Alec loves, Jace trapped in the Institute and his relationship with Magnus still so new, it's the worst time for the venom to strike him down again... but that's exactly what's happening.

Reccer's Notes: This showcases a lovely supportive relationship between Alec, Jace, and Izzy. Whenever I'm in the mood for hurt/comfort, this is one of the fics I always come back to.

Two of the stories in Justice League Quarterly #6 are better recapped later: one’s another Global Guardians bit, and one’s a Blue Beetle story that ends a phase in his development we’ve only seen foreshadowed so far. The other two, we can get to right now! Unfortunately, they're both mysteries with flawed premises, leading to climaxes that misfire even if there's some pleasure to be found in the buildup.

They’re still better than the later Praxis arc, but…low bar. )

Reccer's Notes: The Nie life expectancy means that poor Mingjue is already having to contemplate succeeding his father as Clan Leader. And grooming his little brother as his own successor in turn; it’s like those aphids so short-lived and desperate to survive that they’re born already pregnant.

Which makes this moment when a child allows himself to treat a child like a child all the more poignant.

This week we lost the original Miss Teschmacher, Valerie Perrine (Who was, as an actress, so much more than that role, but what a role she made it), at the age of 82. When your acting debut is in the film version of Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5" and you get good reviews,

Also, Nicholas Brendon, Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died. This is a complicated one; I genuinely liked Xander as a funny, flawed, messed up, and committed character (I always liked the description: "You'd trust Xander with your life, but maybe not your new car"), even though I know the fanbase has reviewed the character in a mostly negative light. I have friends who met Brendon at conventions and spoke highly of him. But I also have to acknowledge his troubled life following that series which harmed others too. So I think I will echo Charisma Carpenter's elegant tribute that "I will miss the version of the man I once knew"

Variety has reported that Star Fleet Academy will not go beyond it's two, already filmed, seasons, which seems a shame, given that if the same logic had been applied to even TNG, we'd likely have no franchise at all now. (They've been screened early seasons over here, and BOY are there a lot of rough episodes in those. Some great performances, and there's a gem or two of an episode yes, but mostly a serious slog). Though admittedly, if I had to pick between seeing Prodigy get a third season or SFA, I'd be team Protostar all the way.

The live action version of "Moana" got a trailer, though all it does is add another of my list of "What is gained by making this movie (as opposed to something new), beyond cash?"

As should be obvious, I love the JLI work of Keith Giffen and his scripting collaborators like J.M. DeMatteis, so I feel a little treasonous saying this about a story by neither Giffen nor DeMatteis. But I have to speak truth. The lead story here, by Mark Waid and Mike McKone, is my favorite JLI story. Full stop.

If only the JLU cartoon had adapted this one. )

Really, it came from something I think when reading those early Ditko issues – how people talk about how horrible Spider-Man is. Now, we see Spider-Man… but they clearly don"t. Doing a story about the horror of that kind of archetype, right? -- Kieron Gillen

I thought “What would Adrian Tchaikovsky do?” and then I add “If he was very drunk and in a bad mood?” -- Kieron Gillen

As Keith Giffen began to pull back, the longest era of Justice League Quarterly (#4-11) would feature other writers following in Giffen’s footsteps…as best they could. The fluid tone of the Giffen League, the way it could lurch from goofy meta to holocaustic grimness and everything in between, could be a challenge to imitate.
